About Vitosha

Mount Vitosha rises to around 1,800 m, barely 10 km from Sofia, and ranks as Bulgaria's largest ski resort. It is a mountain for every season — trekking in summer, skiing in winter — with snow reaching close to 1.5 m and lasting roughly 120 days a season.

The lodges and hotels on the mountain itself are fairly basic, but the setting is captivating. For better-equipped, reasonably priced stays, the Sofia districts of Simeonovo and Dragalevtsi, right at the foot of the slopes, are the natural choice.

Skiing on the edge of the capital

Vitosha is an unusual resort: the ski area sits on the mountain of the same name that towers over Sofia, just a stone's throw from the capital's centre. That proximity is its great draw — locals head up for a day or half-day on the slopes, then drop straight back into the city. The terrain is varied, with easy sectors lower down around Aleko and more serious pitches toward the summit, suited to intermediate and advanced skiers. The weather can be fickle, with wind and fog on top, but on clear days the view over Sofia is memorable.

The technical domain

The domain offers around 20 km of pistes served by 6 lifts. The base sits at 1,530 m and the highest point climbs toward 2,270 m, giving a vertical drop of roughly 740 m — respectable for a resort so close to a city. There is night skiing and a snow park. The season runs, indicatively, from December to April, though over the years the opening of the lifts has depended on conditions and administrative matters, so current operation should be checked.

Practical

Vitosha is the most accessible ski area in the country — reachable from Sofia in under an hour by car, with the Aleko area a popular starting point. Gear rental is available on site, and ski schools offer lessons. The best months are January and February. Après-ski proper is modest, but the great advantage is Sofia itself: restaurants, bars and cultural life minutes away. Check lift operation and prices before you travel, as they vary from season to season.
