About Dragalevski Monastery "Assumption of the Virgin Mary"

A medieval treasure on the edge of Sofia

Dragalevtsi Monastery "Dormition of the Mother of God" stands on the wooded lower slopes of Mount Vitosha, above Sofia's Dragalevtsi district. Founded in the 14th century during the reign of Tsar Ivan Alexander, it belongs to the ring of monasteries around the capital known as the "Sofia Holy Mountain" (Mala Sveta Gora). After the Ottoman conquest the monastery remained an important centre of faith and culture, and was renewed in the 15th century — a rare achievement for that era.

What to see

The monastery's treasure is its old church, whose 15th-century frescoes (1476) rank among the most valuable works of medieval Bulgarian art after the Ottoman conquest. Among them survives a portrait of the donor. The monastery also played a role in modern history: in the 19th century it served as a refuge linked to the national liberation movement, and the revolutionary Vasil Levski used it as a hideout.

Practical

It is easily reached from Sofia by car or public transport to the Dragalevtsi district, from where a road climbs to the monastery through the forest; it is a favourite spot for locals on weekend walks, often combined with the nearby Vitosha chairlift. As an active place of worship, modest dress (covered shoulders and knees) and quiet during services are expected. Spring and autumn are loveliest, when the Vitosha forest changes colour.
