About Golden Bridges
Golden Bridges (Zlatnite Mostove) is one of the most beloved walking areas on Mount Vitosha, right on the edge of Sofia. Its fame comes from a spectacular "stone river": a long stretch of huge granite boulders, smoothed over ages, spilling through the forest along the valley of a mountain stream. The name evokes the golden glint of the lichens and of the water threading between the rocks, especially when sunlight filters through the spruce.
What to see and do The main draw is the boulder field itself, which you can step across and where you can hear hidden water murmuring beneath the stones. The area is a popular starting point for many marked trails toward Vitosha's peaks, including Cherni Vrah, the massif's highest summit. The coniferous forest, clean mountain air and streams make it an ideal spot for a day in nature, a picnic or easy family walks.
Practical Golden Bridges lies very close to Sofia and is reachable by car along the mountain road; on weekends seasonal public transport from the city often runs as well. It is a rewarding stop year-round: in summer for hiking and cool air, and in winter for the snowy landscape, with Vitosha's ski areas nearby. Wear proper footwear, as the rocks can be slippery, and check the forecast, since mountain weather changes quickly. Nearby you will find more trails, meadows and huts where you can pause for a rest.
