About Kamen Del Peak
Kamen Del peak is one of the favourite viewpoints on Mount Vitosha, the massif that rises right above Bulgaria's capital, Sofia. Vitosha is an accessible, much-loved mountain — a stretch of nature on the city's doorstep, easy to reach for a day's walking.
What you'll see
From Kamen Del, broad views open over Sofia and the surrounding plain, and in clear weather you can see Vitosha's ridges and distant ranges. Mount Vitosha is famous for its "stone rivers" (moraines), alpine meadows, conifer forests and a dense network of marked trails. The terrain around the peak is typically Vitoshan: open ground, rock blocks and a feeling of wild nature surprisingly close to the city.
Practical
Access is from Sofia, either by car to the mountain's starting points or on marked paths climbing from the neighbourhoods at its foot. The hike to the peak makes a good day out, popular at weekends. The best season runs from spring into autumn; in winter Vitosha gets snow and turns into ski and snow-hiking country, which completely changes the character of the route. Check the weather first — mist and wind can roll in quickly on the tops — and bring extra layers, as it is cooler than in the city.
