About Vitosha Nature Park

Vitosha Nature Park spreads across the mountain massif that towers over Sofia, so close to the capital that residents can reach it in under an hour. Established in 1934, it is regarded as the oldest nature park in the Balkan Peninsula and remains one of Europe's most accessible mountains for a major city. Its highest summit, Cherni Vrah, rises above 2,290 metres and, on clear days, offers sweeping views over the city and surrounding ranges.

What to see and do Vitosha combines beech and conifer forests, alpine meadows and striking geological features. The best known are its "stone rivers" — long stretches of giant boulders cascading down the slopes, among them the famous Zlatnite Mostove (Golden Bridges). The park is laced with a dense network of marked trails, mountain huts and routes for every level, from easy strolls to the climb up Cherni Vrah. In winter it becomes a ski area just minutes from the city, while in summer it is the favourite spot for hiking, cycling and picnics.

Practical Access is easy from Sofia, by car on the roads climbing to Aleko and Zlatnite Mostove, or by public transport to the mountain's edge. The best season for hiking runs from late spring through autumn, when trails are clear of snow; in winter proper gear is essential and weather can change quickly at altitude. At the foot of the mountain lies the Boyana quarter, with its UNESCO-listed medieval church and the Boyana Waterfall — an excellent pairing for a full day out.
