About Snail House
The Snail House, a Sofia architectural whimsy
The Snail House (Ohlyuva) is one of the most unusual buildings in Bulgaria, standing in the Simeonovo district at the foot of Vitosha Mountain, on the southern edge of Sofia. It is a residential house designed in the shape of a giant snail — the work of architect Simeon Simeonov — built with almost no straight lines and covered in vivid, playful decoration. The shell-like form, the snail's "eyes" and the cheerful colors have made it a much-photographed curiosity, especially loved by families with children.
What to see
The building is a private home, so a visit means admiring it from the outside. The appeal lies in its organic, playful architecture — the shell-mimicking facade, the sculpted details and the bright palette that make it look like something from a cartoon. It is a quick stop, ideal for a few photos on the way up to Vitosha.
Practical tips
The house sits in a quiet residential area of Simeonovo; as it is a private residence, please respect the occupants' privacy and view it only from the street. It is easily reached by car or public transport from central Sofia, and the visit combines naturally with a trip up Vitosha — the nearby cable car, hiking trails and views over the city.
