Borovets
Bulgaria's oldest mountain resort, in the Rila Mountains below Musala, the highest peak in the Balkans.
About Borovets
Borovets is the oldest mountain resort in Bulgaria, set among the conifer forests of the Rila Mountains less than an hour by car from Sofia. It carries the air of an established resort — timber lodges, tall firs, a history that reaches back to the days when kings hunted here — and that is precisely what sets it apart from the country's newer, more engineered destinations.
Above it rises Musala, the highest peak in the entire Balkan range at 2,925 m, a landmark of the massif and a summer hiking objective.
Slopes and ski area
The ski area unfolds across three linked sectors — Sitnyakovo–Martinovi Baraki, Yastrebets and Markudjik — served by a gondola and a network of drag lifts and chairlifts. The base sits around 1,350 m, while the upper stations climb to roughly 2,550 m, giving serious vertical for a resort this easy to reach.
- Total run length is often quoted at around 58 km (approximate — check the official season map).
- Yastrebets holds the piste that has hosted Alpine World Cup racing, a long, technical descent that drops straight through the firs.
- Markudjik, the highest sector, keeps its snow longest and suits clear late-season days.
- There are ski schools and beginner zones, plus tubing and sledging for children.
If you are weighing up the country's two big resorts, the Bansko vs Borovets comparison can help you choose.
Winter and summer
Winter is straightforward: skiing, snowboarding and an après-ski scene in the pedestrian core, where the bars and taverns come alive after the last run. In summer, Borovets changes character entirely. The gondola climbs to Yastrebets, and from there trails set off toward the glacial lakes and up Musala, the classic ascent of the Rila massif. Closer at hand, the trail to the Black Rock is a short, view-rich walk that families can manage.
Where to stay
Accommodation runs from large, self-contained hotels to family aparthotels:
- Hotel Rila — the landmark block at the heart of the resort, steps from the pistes and gondola.
- Hotel LION Borovets and Hotel Festa Winter Palace — spa options that suit longer stays.
- Apart Hotel Flora Residence — apartments with kitchens, practical for families or groups.
Where to eat
The centre is full of places, from Bulgarian cooking to pizza and grill:
- Happy Duck — the most talked-about spot in the resort, lively and busy.
- The Green King and Alpin Restaurant & Pub — hearty meals after a day on the slopes.
Getting there
Borovets is about 73 km from Sofia (approximate), on the road toward Samokov — roughly an hour's drive in good conditions. Seasonal transfers and buses run from the city, and Sofia Airport is the nearest international hub. In winter, winter tyres and chains are common sense on the final stretch.
Tips
- Buy a multi-day skipass — it works out noticeably better than daily tickets.
- On weekends and holidays the gondola queues in the morning; ride up early.
- For Musala, take the early gondola and check the forecast — weather at altitude changes fast.
- Weather and snow figures remain approximate; confirm slope openings on the resort's website before you set out.
Ski area
Borovets
Bulgaria's oldest mountain resort
Borovets is the patriarch of Bulgarian ski resorts, built on the northern slopes of the Rila mountains in the Rila region. More compact and more forested than Bansko, it has a charm of its own: the runs descend through dense conifer forest, and the base is a self-contained resort village easy to cross on foot. It suits families and beginners well, who find friendly terrain in the Sitnyakovo–Martinovi Baraki area, but also advanced skiers, who appreciate the classic Markudjik run from the high point — a piste that hosted World Cup races in the past.
The technical domain
The domain totals around 58 km of pistes, served by 13 lifts. The base already sits high, at 1,315 m, while the gondola climbs toward 2,550 m, giving a vertical drop of roughly 1,235 m. Starting high helps snow quality throughout the winter. There is night skiing and a snow park. The season runs, indicatively, from December to April, with natural snow supplemented by snowmaking on the main sectors.
Practical
Borovets is the closest major resort to Sofia — roughly an hour by car — making it ideal for a city break combined with skiing. Gear rental and ski schools with instructors are available right at the base of the slopes. The best months are January and February. Après-ski is lively and clustered around the resort's hotels and bars, with a large international crowd. Lift-pass prices and services vary from season to season and should be checked before you travel.
