About Boyana Waterfall

Boyana Waterfall lies on the northern slopes of Vitosha mountain, above Sofia's Boyana quarter, and is one of the capital's most popular short-hike destinations. The Boyana river tumbles over a rocky ledge in a forest setting, offering a cool, quiet corner just minutes from the city's edge.

What to see The trail to the falls climbs through the woodland at the foot of the mountain, following the stream. The waterfall is at its most impressive in spring and early summer, when snowmelt boosts the flow; in dry summers the water can drop noticeably. The route is popular with families and beginners, but includes steeper, rockier stretches near the end, so proper footwear is recommended.

Practical The starting point is in the Boyana quarter, easily reached from Sofia by car or public transport. From there a marked path leads up to the falls on a there-and-back hike of a few hours, depending on pace. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons. Nearby are the Boyana Church, UNESCO-listed for its medieval frescoes, and the wider Vitosha Nature Park — so a visit to the waterfall combines easily with other sights in a single day.
