Are there still checks at the Romania–Bulgaria border?
Both countries are in the Schengen area, so there are no systematic checks at land borders. Spot checks can still happen, and in peak season queues form at the bridge because of tolling rather than control. Keep your ID and vehicle documents to hand.
What does the drive cost in total?
It comes down to three moving parts: fuel, the bridge toll and the vignette. The first two are kept live on this page; for the vignette and toll, see the dedicated guide. Work out fuel from your own car's real consumption, not an average.
What should I check on the day itself?
Traffic at the Giurgiu–Ruse bridge and fuel prices — both are live in the panel above. In season, leaving two hours earlier or later can be the difference between a queue and an open road.
Can I buy the vignette at the border?
