Uzana

Bulgaria's geographic centre, about 22 km from Gabrovo: small, modest, and rarely matched for natural beauty.

About Uzana

Uzana, Bulgaria's geographic heart

Tucked among oak forests about 22 km from Gabrovo, Uzana marks Bulgaria's geographic centre. It is a small, modest place, but one with a fittingly symbolic draw — the kind of destination you choose for quiet, clean air and a certain sense of standing at "the middle of the country," rather than for big-resort infrastructure.

Slopes and ski area

Uzana works as a small mountain complex, suited to families and beginners, with short runs and lifts to match. It is not a destination for advanced skiers chasing serious vertical; it is more a weekend on the snow, with sledging and walks. Exact figures for run length and lift operation are approximate and change from season to season — confirm the state of the lifts before you set out.

Winter and summer

Uzana's charm lies in nature and in symbolism. The must-see is the [Geographic Centre of Bulgaria](/obiective/geographical-center-of-bulgaria), marked by a monument on the plateau — the obligatory photo and a landmark that carries real weight for locals. The rest is hiking through the ridge forests and open meadows, within the [Uzana resort complex](/obiective/uzana-resort-complex).

  • Summer — easy trails toward the Central Balkan ridge, cool air, and meadows made for a picnic.
  • Winter — quiet snow, ideal for sledging and family walks.

The area connects naturally to the sights around Gabrovo — the Etar open-air ethnographic museum and the town of Gabrovo itself — for anyone wanting to extend the trip.

Where to stay

Lodging is concentrated in a handful of hotels and mountain houses, in good condition but few in number — hence the need to book ahead:

  • [Semeen hotel "Geografski tsentar"](/cazare/semeen-hotel-geografski-tsentar) — the "Geographic Centre" hotel, full almost year-round.
  • [Hotel Balkanci](/cazare/hotel-balkanci) and [Hotel Prima S](/cazare/hotel-prima-s-uzana) — comfortable options in the area.
  • [Gorski Dom "Uzana"](/cazare/gorski-dom-uzana) — a forest lodge for a more rustic stay.

Where to eat

Meals are traditional, with a mountain character. [Tavern Old House](/restaurante/tavern-old-house) and [Strannopriemnitsa](/restaurante/strannopriemnitsa) serve Bulgarian tavern cooking, while [Pastarvata Fish Farm & Restaurant](/restaurante/pastarvata-fish-farm-restaurant) is the choice for fresh, locally farmed trout.

Getting there

From Gabrovo you climb to Uzana in about 30–40 minutes by car, on the mountain road. From Sofia, the total drive is roughly 3 hours. In winter the final stretch may call for winter tyres. Public transport is limited — your own car is practically essential.

Tips

  • Book accommodation ahead — Uzana has few beds and the central hotel is often full.
  • It remains little known for lack of promotion; that is also its advantage — it comes with quiet, not crowds.
  • Pair the visit with Gabrovo and the Etar museum for a complete weekend.

Uzana — gentle skiing in the heart of Bulgaria

Uzana is a small ski area in the Stara Planina (Balkan) mountains, set right by the geographic centre of Bulgaria above the town of Gabrovo. It is not a major resort but rather an open mountain plateau, popular with Bulgarian families and beginners — a weekend spot rather than a week-long destination. Anyone after long runs and serious vertical will be disappointed; anyone wanting first turns, sledging and clean mountain air will be happy.

The numbers

The area offers roughly 3 km of pistes spread across 8 short runs, served by 10 lifts (mostly drag lifts and beginner conveyors). Altitude runs from 1220 m at the base to 1350 m at the top, giving a vertical of only about 130 m — gentle gradients, ideal for learning. The season runs roughly from December to April depending on snow; at this modest elevation, cover varies a lot from winter to winter. There is no night skiing and no terrain park.

Practical

Access is by car from Gabrovo on a mountain road; coming from southern Romania, the route is via Ruse and then south. Equipment rental and ski schools are generally available on site in season, though the offer is modest — check ahead. The most reliable months for snow are January and February. Uzana works best as a day trip or combined with a visit to the nearby Etar open-air museum and the Sokolski Monastery.
