Batoshevski Monastery

Batoshevski Monastery, dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God, lies in the heart of the Balkan Mountains (Stara Planina), near the village of Batoshevo in the Sevlievo area, not far from the Uzana plateau. It is a secluded mountain monastery, tucked among forested hills well away from the busy tourist routes — a quiet place suited to reflection rather than spectacle.

Like many foundations in the central Balkan range, the monastery traces its roots to the Bulgarian Middle Ages, but it passed through cycles of destruction and renewal across the centuries of Ottoman rule. What stands today owes much to the Bulgarian National Revival of the 19th century, the era in which numerous monasteries in the region were rebuilt and once again became centres of faith and of Bulgarian identity. This is an active place of worship — dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered), keep your voice down and avoid photographing during services. Late spring and autumn are the loveliest times, when the Balkan forest turns colour. It pairs naturally with a trip to Uzana or with the museum-towns of the Gabrovo region.
