About Uzana - resort complex
The geographic centre of Bulgaria
Uzana is a mountain recreation area set high in the Stara Planina, known above all as the place where, by tradition, the geographic centre of Bulgaria lies, marked by a monument. It is a broad upland meadow surrounded by forest and pasture, serving as a starting point for hikes and a destination for relaxing in nature, away from the bustle of the towns.
What you'll find here
The spot is valued for its clean air, open mountain scenery and the network of trails around it. In summer it suits walks, hiking and outings into nature, while in winter the area gets snow and draws people looking for cold-season activities. The complex offers accommodation and dining facilities geared to mountain tourism. It is the kind of place you come to for quiet, for nature and for a few accessible trails.
Practical notes
Uzana is most easily reached by car, on the road climbing towards the Stara Planina ridge; the town of Gabrovo is the natural nearby base for supplies and access. Being at altitude, the weather can be changeable and cooler than in the valley — bring layers even in summer. Clear weather is best for the views and walking. It can be combined with sights around Gabrovo, such as the Etar open-air museum.
