About Dryanovo monastery "St. Archangel Michael"
Dryanovo Monastery "St. Archangel Michael"
Tucked into a narrow, rocky gorge carved by the Dryanovska River, a few kilometres from the town of Dryanovo and not far from the Uzana mountain area in the heart of the Balkan range (Stara Planina), this is one of central Bulgaria's most beloved sites for both pilgrims and hikers. Founded in the Middle Ages, during the Second Bulgarian Empire, it was destroyed and rebuilt several times across the centuries of Ottoman rule; the present complex dates from the 19th century.
The monastery's name is inseparable from the April Uprising of 1876: a band of revolutionaries led by Pop Hariton and Bacho Kiro Petkov barricaded themselves here and held out for several days against besieging Ottoman troops. The stand ended tragically and the monastery was burned. Today an ossuary and a memorial keep the fallen in remembrance, making the place a symbol of Bulgarian national resistance.
What to see
The complex — with its stone walls and the wooden Revival-era galleries — sits dramatically beneath tall cliffs. The church holds icons and an iconostasis worth pausing over, and the sober courtyard invites quiet reflection. Just a short walk away lies the Bacho Kiro cave, one of Bulgaria's best-known show caves, with galleries and striking formations — a rare blend of history, faith and nature.
Practical
It is easily reached by car off the Dryanovo–Gabrovo road, with parking nearby. The monastery is an active place of worship — dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered) and respect services and the silence of the grounds. Spring and autumn are loveliest, when the gorge turns green or gold. Pair your visit with the Bacho Kiro cave and a short walk on the surrounding trails. Visitor ratings are very high (around 4.7 out of 5).
