About Geographical center of Bulgaria
The Geographical Centre of Bulgaria sits at Uzana, a broad clearing in the heart of the Balkan Mountains (Stara Planina), near Gabrovo. The spot marks the point considered the geometric centre of Bulgarian territory and is flagged by a marker monument, a pleasant stop for travellers crossing the Balkan ridge.
What to see The central point is marked by a stone monument where visitors usually pause for a photo. Beyond the geographical symbolism, the real draw is the setting: the Uzana meadow, ringed by forests and mountain pastures, offers clean air, open views and a sense of calm. The area serves as a starting point for hikes and, in winter, for skiing on the small nearby slopes.
Practical Uzana is reached most easily by car from Gabrovo, on a mountain road climbing into the Balkans. The nicest time to visit is from late spring through autumn, when the trails are open and the meadows are green; in winter it becomes a small mountain getaway. Nearby, the Etara open-air museum, Sokolski Monastery and the town of Gabrovo — famous for its sense of humour — are well worth adding to the route. A modest landmark in scale, but a satisfying tick on a tour of the central Balkans.
