About Glozhene Monastery
The monastery on the rock
Glozhene Monastery "St George the Victorious" is one of Bulgaria's most dramatically sited monasteries, perched on a rocky ridge on the northern slopes of the Stara Planina (Balkan) Mountains, about 12 km from the town of Teteven. Its position on a stone outcrop above the Cherni Vit valley gives it a silhouette that seems almost suspended in the air — hence its nickname, "the monastery in the sky".
Tradition links its founding to the 13th century and to a nobleman of Rus origin, Georgi Glozh, who is said to have settled here in the time of Tsar Ivan Asen II, bringing an icon of St George with him. These origins are largely legend; what is certain is that the monastery existed by the 17th–18th centuries, when it was rebuilt on the rock to shelter it from Ottoman raids. During the Bulgarian National Revival it became a quiet stronghold of the liberation struggle: Vasil Levski, the "Apostle of Freedom", is said to have used it as a refuge during his secret missions.
What to see
The present church, dedicated to St George, was raised after a 1928 earthquake badly damaged the old complex. The draw here is less the richness of the frescoes than the extraordinary setting: the courtyard, the bell tower and the sweeping view over the forests and peaks of the Stara Planina. The place breathes mountain austerity rather than decorative splendour.
Practical
You reach it by car from Teteven along a mountain road, the final stretch climbing through the rocks. It is an active monastery — dress modestly and keep quiet during services. Early morning or autumn, when the forest turns, are the finest times to visit. Nearby, Teteven and the surrounding valleys are well worth exploring and ideal for hiking. The monastery is highly rated by visitors (around 4.7/5).
