About Shipka Memorial Church
Golden domes on the Shipka Pass
The Shipka Memorial Church (Nativity Memorial Temple) is one of Bulgaria's most recognisable monuments, with its Russian silhouette and onion-shaped, gold-leafed domes. It rises on the southern slope of the Balkan Mountains, near the Shipka Pass, in the village of Shipka. Built between 1885 and 1902, it commemorates the Russian, Bulgarian and volunteer soldiers who fell in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878, whose decisive battles at Shipka opened the road to Bulgaria's liberation.
What to see
The church is built in the 17th-century Russian style, with five gilded domes and a tall bell tower. The lower crypt holds the remains of fallen soldiers, while marble plaques inside record the names of units and battles. The tower's bells — cast in part from shell casings gathered on the battlefield — are among the largest in Bulgaria. The iconostasis and interior painting complete its solemn, memorial atmosphere.
Practical
The church is both an active place of worship and a national monument; it is reached by car from Kazanlak or Gabrovo, on the road climbing toward the pass. Visitors are asked to dress modestly and to keep the respect due to a place of remembrance. Nearby, the Freedom Monument on Shipka Peak and the Balkan ridge are well worth the climb; spring and autumn offer the clearest views.
