About Waterfall “Kotlite”

"Kotlite" Waterfall

In the Stara Planina (Balkan Mountains), near the town of Berkovitsa in northwestern Bulgaria, the "Kotlite" Waterfall is a destination for lovers of hiking and nature. The name ("Kotlite" — the cauldrons/potholes) refers to the basins carved into the rock by water over time. The Berkovitsa area, at the foot of Mount Kom, is among the finest for mountain walks in this part of the country.

What you'll see

The waterfall is reached along forest trails, and the reward is a cascade set in mountain scenery, with the characteristic basins worn into the stone. The trail itself — through woods, beside the stream — is an important part of the experience, with clean air and quiet. It's the kind of place suited to a day hike, nature photography and a cool break in the warm season.

Practical

The usual starting point is the Berkovitsa area, reachable by car from northwestern Bulgaria; from there you continue on foot along marked paths. Hiking footwear is recommended, and trails can be slippery in wet weather. The water flow is usually strongest in spring and after rain. Combine the visit with other attractions around Berkovitsa and the Kom massif. Check trail conditions and the weather before setting out.
