About Vazov trail - Gara Bov Trailhead
The Vazov Trail — Gara Bov trailhead
The Vazov Trail ("Vazova ekopateka") is a themed mountain path in the Stara Planina, in the area of the Iskar river gorge, with its trailhead next to the railway station of the village of Bov. It is named after the great Bulgarian writer Ivan Vazov and combines hiking with the dramatic scenery of the gorge — cliffs, forests and open views over the valley.
What to expect
The path climbs through the rocky part of the gorge, with built sections (steps, railings, walkways) that ease the passage through the steeper stretches and open onto viewpoints over the rock formations and the Iskar valley. Along the way there are wide vistas much appreciated by hikers and photographers. It is a trail well suited to a day outing, with moderate effort but passages that call for care.
Practical information
The trailhead is very convenient to reach by train, Bov station lying on the line that runs through the Iskar gorge from Sofia — a popular option precisely because it needs no car. The best time is spring through autumn, when the path is dry and the weather settled; avoid it in rain or ice, when the rocks become slippery. Wear hiking shoes with good grip, carry water and check the state of the trail before setting out. The surrounding Iskar gorge offers further paths and natural sights, easy to combine into an active outdoor stay.
