About Vrah Okolchitsa

Okolchitsa Peak

Okolchitsa is a summit in the Stara Planina (the Balkan Mountains) of north-western Bulgaria, bound to one of the most important moments in the country's national history: the struggle and death of the poet and revolutionary Hristo Botev in 1876, during the uprising against Ottoman rule. On the peak stands a large cross-monument to his memory, which has become a place of national pilgrimage.

What to see

On the ridge rises the monumental cross, visible from afar, raised in honour of Botev and those who fell with him. From here the view opens widely over the forested ridges of the Stara Planina. The site carries strong symbolic weight for Bulgarians: every year, on the day commemorating Botev, ceremonies and marches take place here, and many visitors climb on foot along the route tied to the history of his band of rebels.

Practical information

The area is reached by car on mountain roads, with the final stretch covered on foot along marked paths; many choose to make the climb as a hike. The best time is spring through autumn, when the trails are accessible and the weather more settled; in winter, access can be difficult because of snow. Wear mountain footwear and carry water, as this is high, wind-exposed terrain. A visit can be combined with exploring the mountainous surroundings of north-western Bulgaria and the places connected to the Botev epic.
