About Kom Peak
Kom Peak
A summit in the western part of the Balkan Mountains (Stara Planina), above the town of Berkovitsa in northwestern Bulgaria. Kom is a name familiar to every Bulgarian hiker, because it marks one end of the famous Kom–Emine route — the ridge trek that runs the entire length of the Balkan range, from this peak to Cape Emine on the Black Sea coast. With a 4.9 rating, it is a much-loved destination for ascents and for the views from the top.
What you'll see
From the summit a wide panorama opens over the ridges of the western Balkans and the valleys around, and on a clear day the view reaches far. High meadows and open terrain make the climb pleasant and bright. Near the peak stands a mountain hut, a landmark and resting point for those setting out along the ridge or climbing just for the day. For many, reaching Kom marks the symbolic start of the great Balkan traverse.
Practical
The usual starting point is the Berkovitsa area, from where a mountain road leads toward the foot of the peak, and the trail continues on foot from there. The best season runs from late spring through autumn; in winter and at altitude the weather can be harsh and fog rolls in quickly. Bring water, warm layers and trekking footwear. Check the condition of the access road and the hut before you go, as both can vary by season.
