About Ledenika Cave

A star cave of the Balkan Mountains

Ledenika Cave is one of the best-known and most visited caves in Bulgaria, carved into the limestone of the Balkan Mountains (Stara Planina) in the north-west of the country. Its name comes from the ice that forms in the cold season in the first hall, near the entrance — the detail that made it famous. It is an excellent stop for anyone wanting to combine mountain walking with an accessible, spectacular underground experience.

What you'll see inside

The arranged route passes through a string of halls linked by galleries, decorated with stalactites, stalagmites and limestone formations shaped over many thousands of years. Guides like to point out shapes that imagination has given evocative names. One of the large halls is noted for its remarkable acoustics. The cave stays cold all year round, and in places the path can be damp and slippery.

Practical notes

Ledenika is visited with a guide along a marked route; bring a jacket even in summer, as it is consistently chilly inside, and wear shoes with good grip. It is most easily reached by car, on the road that climbs into the mountains; the surrounding area offers fine Stara Planina scenery, ideal for extending the trip with a walk. Check the visiting schedule before setting off, as entry is in accompanied groups. If the ice in the first hall interests you, the cold season is when it appears.
