About Uhlovitsa Cave

Uhlovitsa Cave is one of the most beautiful show caves in the Rhodope Mountains of southern Bulgaria, set near the village of Mogilitsa and the town of Smolyan, in the Chepelare area. It is celebrated for its rare formations, above all the stone "frozen waterfalls" that earned it the nickname "the cave of the waterfalls".

What to see Inside, Uhlovitsa impresses with a sequence of halls and galleries decorated with stalactites, stalagmites and flowstone draperies shaped by water over thousands of years. The most striking feature is the cascading, terraced formations that look like waterfalls turned to stone. The visitor route climbs and descends on fitted metal stairways, so walking through the cave takes a little physical effort.

Practical The cave is visited with a guide, in groups, along a prepared route. As a mountain cave, the temperature inside stays low year-round, so a jacket is essential even in summer, and shoes with good grip are recommended. Visiting hours and availability can vary by season, so it is worth checking before you go (details indicative). The surrounding Rhodopes offer mountain scenery, traditional villages and other natural sights that combine easily into a day trip.
