About Museum of the Rhodope Karst
The Museum of the Rhodope Karst in Chepelare is a small themed museum dedicated to the underground world of the Rhodope Mountains, one of Bulgaria's richest karst regions. Devoted to geology, caves and speleology, it makes an excellent starting point for understanding how water has carved the area's limestone landscape over time, leaving it full of caves, chasms and striking formations.
What you'll see The exhibition presents collections of minerals and rocks, cave formations (stalactites and stalagmites), along with displays and maps explaining how karst landscapes form. It illustrates cave-dwelling wildlife and the work of the cavers who explore and map the caves of the Rhodopes. For families and nature lovers, the museum offers a clear, accessible introduction to this hidden world, complementing a visit to the region's show caves.
Practical The museum is in the town of Chepelare, easily reached by car along the mountain road from Plovdiv, Smolyan or the nearby Pamporovo resort. It is a good stop when the weather is less suited to hiking and pairs naturally with a visit to the famous caves of the Rhodope Mountains. For opening hours and ticket prices, we recommend checking current information before you go. The area also offers other attractions, from mountain trails to traditional villages such as Shiroka Laka.
