About Shiroka Laka

Shiroka Laka is one of the most beautiful museum-villages in the Rhodope Mountains, tucked into a narrow valley near Chepelare in southern Bulgaria. Its distinctive character comes from remarkably well-preserved Rhodopean architecture: stone-and-timber houses clinging to the slopes, with tall chimneys, shuttered windows and cobbled yards, strung along the small river that gives the village its name. It feels like a place where time has slowed, and many of its buildings are protected cultural monuments.

What to see The heart of the village is its old stone bridge and the cobbled lanes climbing to the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin, one of the region's notable Bulgarian Revival churches. Shiroka Laka is best known for its folklore school, where students learn the gaida (the bagpipe emblematic of the Rhodopes) and keep alive the area's traditional polyphonic singing. The classic Rhodopean houses, with their warm wooden interiors, give the village an authentic charm, and small workshops and inns preserve old crafts.

Practical You reach it by car along the mountain road from Smolyan or Pamporovo; the route is winding but the scenery is superb. The village pairs naturally with a stay at Pamporovo resort or a visit to the nearby caves. It is liveliest in winter, around Epiphany, when masked kukeri customs take place, but also pleasant in summer when the mountain weather is mild. Bring comfortable shoes for the steep lanes and leave time for a coffee or a traditional Rhodopean lunch.
