About Veliko Tarnovo

Veliko Tarnovo was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire and remains one of the country's most striking cities by virtue of its setting alone. Its houses scramble one above another on the steep slopes overlooking the gorge carved by the Yantra river.

The Tsarevets fortress, raised on a hill of its own, commands the town and recalls the age when this was the heart of medieval Bulgarian power. Nearby lies Arbanasi, a village known for its old houses and painted churches, easily folded into a visit.
