About Trapezitsa Fortress

Trapezitsa Fortress is one of the two fortified hills that formed the heart of the medieval capital of Veliko Tarnovo, alongside the better-known Tsarevets. During the Second Bulgarian Empire, Trapezitsa was the city's aristocratic and ecclesiastical quarter, dense with churches and the residences of the nobility.

What you'll see The hill, ringed on three sides by the meanders of the Yantra river, preserves the traces of its defensive walls and the foundations of numerous medieval churches uncovered through archaeological excavation. Walking among the ruins gives a vivid sense of life in the Bulgarian capital of the 12th–14th centuries, along with sweeping views over the old town, the Tsarevets fortress on the neighbouring hill, and the Yantra valley. The atmosphere is calmer and less crowded than Tsarevets, which makes it rewarding for those after history without the crowds.

Practical Trapezitsa lies right beside Veliko Tarnovo's historic centre. You can reach it on foot via a fairly steep climb, or there is a funicular linking the lower town to the hill — check whether it is running during your visit. Wear comfortable shoes, as the terrain is uneven. The best light for photographs is early morning or towards sunset. Combine the visit with Tsarevets and the old town for a full day. Check official sources for current hours and fees, as these may change.
