About Park "Sveta Gora"
Park "Sveta Gora" (the "Holy Forest") is one of the most pleasant green spaces in Veliko Tarnovo, spread over a hill on the far bank of the Yantra River, across from the historic side of town. It is a favourite with locals and students alike, lying close to St. Cyril and St. Methodius University.
What to see The park offers shaded walking paths among the trees, lawns for relaxing, and a number of monuments and busts dedicated to Bulgarian figures. Its greatest asset, though, is the view: from the park's higher ground there are fine panoramas over the old town, with its houses clinging dramatically to the slopes above the loop of the Yantra, and over the surrounding hills. It is a good spot for a quiet break away from the bustle of the centre.
Practical The park lies a short distance from Veliko Tarnovo's historic core; you can reach it on foot by crossing to the opposite bank of the Yantra, though the climb takes a little effort. It is loveliest in spring and summer, when the greenery is lush, or toward sunset for warm light over the town. Combine the visit with a stroll through the old town and the Tsarevets Fortress, the city's main highlights, both nearby.
