About Monument to the Assen Dynasty

The Monument to the Asen Dynasty is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Veliko Tarnovo, the former medieval capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire. Raised in honor of the brothers Asen and Petar, who led the late-12th-century uprising that restored Bulgaria's independence from the Byzantine Empire, the ensemble also commemorates the Asen dynasty that followed. It is a monumental modern-era work conceived as a symbol of national revival and pride.

What you'll see The monument rises above the Yantra River, where the water loops dramatically around the old quarters. Four bronze horsemen are arranged around a tall obelisk crowned with a sword, a dynamic composition suggesting momentum and force. From the esplanade opens one of the finest panoramas over the terraced town, with houses clinging to the slopes and the fortified Tsarevets hill in the distance.

Practical The monument sits a short walk from the historic centre and the Samovodska Charshia craft street, reachable on foot in a few minutes. Morning and evening light show the bronze and the river panorama at their best. Combine the visit with Tsarevets Fortress and a stroll through the old town for a full half-day in Veliko Tarnovo.
