"Tsar Asen I" Square

"Tsar Asen I" Square in Veliko Tarnovo is the open space dominated by the imposing Monument of the Asen Dynasty (Asenevtsi), one of the city's best-known landmarks. Set beside the loop of the Yantra River, the ensemble commemorates the dynasty that founded the Second Bulgarian Empire, with Veliko Tarnovo as its medieval capital.

What to see The monument consists of a tall obelisk shaped like a sword raised to the sky, around which gallop the equestrian statues of four rulers of the Asen dynasty. It is a dramatic, highly photogenic composition, especially against the backdrop of old houses climbing the slopes and the waters of the Yantra. The surrounding square offers room to stroll and good vantage points from which to take in both the monument and the panorama of the historic town.

Practical The square lies in the central area of Veliko Tarnovo, reachable on foot, outdoors and free to visit at any time. Sunset or evening light flatters the silhouette of the monument. Combine the visit with a walk along the Yantra and the city's other sights – the Tsarevets Fortress and the historic quarter are nearby.
