About Sarafkina House Museum

Sarafkina House

One of the finest house-museums in Veliko Tarnovo, Sarafkina House is a brilliant example of Bulgarian Revival architecture (19th century). Built on the steep slope above the Yantra River, on the picturesque Gurko Street, the house impresses with the way it rises over several levels from the hillside, with a symmetrical facade and the bay windows typical of the era.

What to see

The name comes from a wealthy money-changer (sarafin), and the interiors preserve the atmosphere of a prosperous merchant's home: carved wooden ceilings, period furniture and household objects. Today the house holds an ethnographic exhibition illustrating urban life, crafts and traditional costumes of the Tarnovo region. The view over the Yantra and the old quarter completes the visit.

Practical

The house stands on Gurko Street, one of the town's most photogenic lanes, reached on foot from the historic centre. It is naturally visited together with Tsarevets fortress and the other period houses nearby, including the famous "Monkey House". Check opening hours before you go, as they can vary by season. Gurko Street can be steep and cobbled, so wear comfortable shoes. Rating 4.5.
