About Pomorie Saltpans
The Pomorie Salt Pans
Pomorie is renowned for its salt lagoons, stretched between the sea and Lake Pomorie, where salt has been harvested by traditional methods for centuries. Today the area blends heritage, nature and wellness, making it one of the most distinctive sights on Bulgaria's southern coast.
What to see and experience
The complex includes an open-air salt museum, where you can follow the process of evaporating brine in shallow basins and the manual harvesting of the crystals. Lake Pomorie is also an important wetland for birds, popular with birdwatchers, especially during migration. The healing mud (black lye) found here has long been used for therapeutic purposes.
Practical
The salt pans lie in the north of town, near Pomorie beach, reachable by car or on foot from the resort and from Burgas. The best season is summer, when harvesting is active and sunlight brings out the lake's colours; for birds, spring and autumn are ideal. Bring a hat and water, as the area is open and shadeless. It pairs well with the Pomorie Thracian tomb. Rating 4.5.
