About Thracian Tumulus
The Thracian Tomb of Pomorie
On the edge of the seaside resort of Pomorie, on Bulgaria's southern Black Sea coast, stands one of the country's most unusual ancient monuments: a Thracian tholos (domed) tomb, generally dated to the early Roman period. Unlike ordinary burial mounds, here the stone structure remains visible and accessible, making the visit a direct encounter with ancient engineering.
What to see
The highlight is the circular vaulted chamber with a massive central pillar that flares out at the top like an inverted funnel, supporting the stone dome. This rare construction in the Thraco-Roman world suggests the monument served as the tomb of a wealthy family and possibly as a cult site (heroon). The access corridor (dromos) and careful masonry complete the picture.
Practical
The monument lies north of the Pomorie resort centre, easily reached on foot or by car from town and from nearby Burgas. The visit is short, ideal as one stop on a day that also takes in the Pomorie salt pans or the nearby St George Monastery. We recommend checking opening hours before you go, as they can vary by season. With a 4.5 rating, it is most appreciated by those keen on ancient history.
