About Pomorie Lake Visitor Center
Pomorie Lake and Visitor Center
On the northern edge of Pomorie, salt lagoons stretch like mirrors between sea and land. Pomorie Lake is a hypersaline coastal lagoon, part of a chain of lakes along the southern Black Sea coast that is prized for its birdlife. The Visitor Center is the natural starting point for understanding this distinctive landscape, where nature, the age-old craft of salt harvesting and bird migration all converge.
What you will see
The lake is one of the most important stopovers for migratory birds on the Via Pontica flyway linking Europe with Africa. Depending on the season, you can spot a wide range of shore and water birds — among the most sought-after by birdwatchers are swans, pelicans and numerous waders. The center hosts exhibitions on the lagoon ecosystem, its wildlife and the traditional salt pans, where salt is still produced by the natural evaporation of seawater. Therapeutic mud, used by locals for generations, is also drawn from the lake.
Practical
The lake lies just a few kilometers from central Pomorie and the nearby resorts, easily reached by car or a short walk. The best times for birdwatching are spring and autumn during the migrations, though summer also brings many breeding species. Bring binoculars and comfortable shoes; early morning or evening light is ideal for photography. Nearby you will find Pomorie's beaches, the old peninsula town and the Salt Museum, which round out a day spent exploring this corner of the coast.
