About Rila Monastery
Bulgaria's most important monastery
Rila Monastery is the largest and most revered Orthodox monastic complex in Bulgaria and one of the country's national symbols. Set at around 1,150 m in a forested valley of the Rila Mountains south of Sofia, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. Tradition traces its origins to the 10th century and to the hermit John of Rila (Sveti Ivan Rilski), the spiritual patron of Bulgaria, whose relics are kept here. The present ensemble dates mostly from the first half of the 19th century, rebuilt after a devastating fire in 1833, and played a vital role in preserving the Bulgarian language, culture and national consciousness through the centuries of Ottoman rule.
What to see
The inner courtyard, ringed by tiers of arcaded galleries in black-and-white stripes, is immediately striking for its rhythm of arches. At its heart stands the main church of the Nativity of the Virgin, crowned by five domes, its open porch covered in extraordinary frescoes painted around 1840 — including the famous scenes of the Last Judgement. The gilded, intricately carved wooden iconostasis is one of the masterpieces of Bulgarian art. The complex is dominated by Hrelyo's Tower (1335), the only surviving medieval structure. The monastery museum holds the Rafail Cross, a wooden cross carved over decades with hundreds of minuscule biblical scenes, worked with a needle.
Practical
It is easily reached by car from Sofia (about 120 km) or on organised day trips; buses run via Blagoevgrad or the town of Rila. Entry to the courtyard and church is free, while the museum charges separately. As an active monastery, modest dress is required (covered shoulders and knees) and silence is kept during services. Late spring and autumn are loveliest; nearby, it is well worth the hike up to the cave and tomb of Saint John of Rila, a few kilometres higher in the mountains.
