Ruen Monastery "Sv. Ioan Rilski"

Ruen Monastery, dedicated to Saint John of Rila (Sveti Ivan Rilski), is a small monastic foundation set in the mountains of south-western Bulgaria, in an open and quiet natural setting. In its present form it is a relatively young monastery, dedicated to Bulgaria's most revered saint and spiritual patron.

The place appeals above all for its wide views over the surrounding mountains and its atmosphere of calm, far from the crowds. The church and buildings are modest; the value of a visit lies more in the journey through nature and the sense of retreat than in any spectacular artistic heritage. It is reached by car along mountain roads and suits a walking trip in the area well. As an active place of worship, modest dress and respect for prayer and services are expected. It is most pleasant in fair weather, from spring through autumn, when the roads are passable.
