About Monastery "Virgin Bogoroditsa Spileotisa"
The Monastery of "Virgin Bogoroditsa Spileotisa", at the foot of Malyovitsa
In the heart of the Rila Mountains, near the Malyovitsa mountain resort — one of Bulgaria's most beloved starting points for climbers and hikers — lies the small Monastery of the "Virgin Mary Spileotisa". The name "Spileotisa" means "of the cave", an old epithet of the Mother of God in Orthodox tradition, linked to icons and prayer places sheltered in the rock.
It is a modest foundation, valued above all for its spectacular natural setting and its quiet, far from the crowds. Exact historical facts — the year of founding, its patrons — need verification, so we leave them open; what defines it is the atmosphere of a mountain hermitage, with the Rila peaks all around.
Practical
It is reached from the village of Govedartsi and the Malyovitsa resort, along the road climbing toward the mountain base, from where famous trails set off to Malyovitsa Peak and the alpine lakes of Rila. As a place of worship, modest dress and respect are expected, and access to the interior may depend on a resident or caretaker being present. It is loveliest from spring to autumn, when the paths are open. A visit pairs perfectly with a hike in Rila and, for those willing to travel further, with the famous Rila Monastery in the same massif. Details about the icons and wall paintings remain to be confirmed on site.
