About Etropole monastery “Holy Trinity”
An old centre of Bulgarian letters
Etropole Monastery, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, lies in the Balkan Mountains near the small town of Etropole, north-east of Sofia, in a quiet forest setting. It is best known as one of Bulgaria's most important centres for the writing and copying of manuscripts in the 17th century: a celebrated school of calligraphers and miniaturists worked here, producing numerous religious books and helping to preserve Bulgarian written culture under Ottoman rule. The monastery has passed through destruction and rebuilding over the centuries.
What to see
Today's complex, modest and serene, keeps its church and monastic buildings in a pleasant mountain landscape. The mood is one of quiet reflection rather than grandeur; the site's value lies above all in its cultural legacy and natural surroundings. For details of frescoes and surviving objects it is best to ask on site, as the heritage has suffered losses over time.
Practical
It is reached by car from Etropole along a mountain road, and pairs naturally with a walk in an area known for its waterfalls and trails. As an active monastery, modest dress and quiet during services are expected. It is most pleasant from spring through autumn.
