About Smolyan lakes
The Smolyan Lakes
The Smolyan Lakes (Смолянски езера) are a cluster of mountain lakes scattered through the coniferous forests of the Rhodope Mountains, above the town of Smolyan and close to the Pamporovo resort in southern Bulgaria. It is a tranquil place much loved for nature walks: mirrors of water framed by spruce, with quiet reflections and a calm that contrasts sharply with the bustle of the coast. There were once more lakes than today; some have shrunk or disappeared over time, but those that remain keep a distinct charm in every season.
What to see and do
The area is perfect for easy hiking and unwinding: paths among the trees link the lakes, with resting spots and views over water and forest. It's an ideal setting for photography, a picnic, and family strolls away from the crowds. Each lake has its own character — some more open, others tucked between the hills. In autumn the colours of the Rhodope forest make the landscape especially beautiful, while in spring and summer the green is vivid.
Practical
The lakes lie a short distance from both Smolyan and Pamporovo, most conveniently reached by car along the mountain road; from there you continue on foot along the trails. The best season runs from late spring through autumn, when the weather is mild and the paths are passable; in winter the area can be under snow. Bring comfortable footwear, water, and a jacket, as mountain weather changes quickly. A visit pairs well with Pamporovo, the town of Smolyan, and other Rhodope sights nearby.
