Rozhen Flagpole

A giant flag on the Rhodope heights

The Rozhen Flagpole is a modern landmark in the Pamporovo area, set on the scenic heights near the Rozhen pass and meadow in the Rhodope Mountains. The pole, flying a large Bulgarian flag visible from a distance, has become a favourite stopping point for the sweeping views it offers over the surrounding mountains. With a 4.7 rating, it is valued above all for its panorama and photo opportunities.

What to see

The main draw is the view: from here broad vistas open across the forested ridges of the Rhodopes, a region known for its tranquil landscapes and clear skies. The nearby Rozhen meadow is famous in Bulgaria for the traditional fair held there periodically, a gathering of folklore and mountain communities. The area also lies close to the Rozhen Astronomical Observatory, one of the most important in the region, adding a further point of interest for curious travellers.

Practical information

The spot is reached from the Pamporovo resort and the Smolyan area, along the mountain roads that cross the Rhodopes. The most pleasant time to visit runs from late spring to early autumn, when the weather is mild and visibility good; in winter the mountain roads can be more challenging. We recommend windproof clothing and a camera. Nearby you can combine your visit with a trip to the astronomical observatory, with hiking and with exploring the traditional villages of the area.
