About Rilska Skakavitsa waterfall

The Rilska Skakavitsa waterfall is one of the tallest and most striking waterfalls in the Rila Mountains, hidden in the forests of the Malyovitsa area in the north of the massif. The water plunges over a rocky lip in a high column ringed by conifer forest — a cool, dramatic sight, especially in spring and early summer when the flow is at its strongest.

What you'll see

The waterfall forms on the Rilska river and drops from a considerable height; it is often cited among the tallest in the Rila region (exact height figures are orientative and vary between sources). The approach trail winds through shady, attractive forest with streams and moss, and the end point gives a close view of the falling water and the cloud of spray it throws up. It makes a good half-day hike, quieter than Rila's headline destinations.

Practical

The usual starting point is the Malyovitsa area / mountain centre, where a marked path leads toward the waterfall. The hike is moderate but includes uphill sections on forest terrain that can be slippery after rain — sturdy footwear is recommended. The best time is late spring and early summer, when snowmelt swells the falls; flow drops through the summer. Check the trail markings and condition before setting out, and take care on the wet rocks near the cascade.
