About Malyovitsa
Malyovitsa is one of the best-loved peaks and valleys in the Rila massif and a legendary name in the history of Bulgarian mountaineering. It lies in the northern part of the Rila Mountains and became, generations ago, the "cradle" of Bulgarian alpinism — the launch point for countless climbers and hikers.
What you'll see
The Malyovitsa valley climbs through coniferous forest into an alpine world of sharp ridges, rock walls and glacial cirques. Malyovitsa peak, rising above 2,700 m, offers broad views across the Rila ridgelines from its summit. Along the way you pass small waterfalls, meadows and mountain tarns; deeper in the massif lies the famous Strashnoto ezero (the "Fearful Lake") and the technical ridge terrain that built the area's reputation among climbers. The mountain centre at the foot of the valley, with its hut, remains a classic starting point for those heading higher.
Practical
Access is by car to the Malyovitsa mountain centre, where the marked trails begin. The climb to the summit is a solid full-day hike for reasonably fit walkers; the final stretch to the ridge is steep and exposed, and in bad weather can demand real mountain experience. The best season for hiking is summer and early autumn, when the paths are clear of snow; in winter the area is also used for ski touring and ice climbing, but it then becomes serious mountain terrain. Proper gear, water and layers for sudden weather changes are essential.
