Bistritsa Waterfall lies in the Rila massif, in the Malyovitsa area — one of the best-loved gateways into the mountain for hikers and climbers. The Bistritsa mountain river, fed by the cold waters of Rila's ridges, forms a picturesque cascade here, surrounded by coniferous forest. With a 4.8 rating, it is a pleasant stop on the area's trails.

What you'll experience

The waterfall is a cool, lively sight, especially in spring and early summer when snowmelt swells the flow and makes it spectacular. The hike to it crosses forest and riverbanks, with clean air and the sound of water as a backdrop. The Malyovitsa area is the starting point for famous Rila routes, including the climb to Malyovitsa peak and on toward the Seven Rila Lakes, so the surrounding alpine scenery is striking.

Practical

You reach the Malyovitsa area by car (accessible via Govedartsi / Samokov), then continue on hiking paths to the waterfall. Wear boots and proper mountain gear. The best season is late spring through autumn; the flow peaks in spring, though trails can be wet. Check the markings and a trail map before setting out. Nearby are the Malyovitsa mountain centre and the trailheads for Rila's classic routes.
