Sozopol's Main Square

The main square is the heart of the old town of Sozopol (Созопол), one of the oldest settlements on Bulgaria's Black Sea coast, founded in antiquity as a Greek colony (Apollonia Pontica). The square is the starting point for exploring the historic peninsula: an open, lively space around which the cobbled lanes, traditional timber-and-stone houses, and terraces of the old town unfold.

The square works as both a meeting place and a gateway to the historic centre: from here you wander into the narrow streets lined with the area's characteristic houses, their upper wooden storeys jutting out over the lane, and reach the old churches, the restored fortress walls, and the seafront promenade with its sea views.
