About Nunnery "Orlitsa"

The Orlitsa Nunnery is a metochion (dependent house) of the great Rila Monastery, set in the Rila Mountains on the road climbing up towards the famous lavra. Historically tied to Rila Monastery — Bulgaria's foremost spiritual centre and a UNESCO site — Orlitsa has long served as one of its metochia. The name is linked to the Orlitsa area, and tradition places its origins in the medieval Bulgarian period; the exact dates need verification and we treat them with care.

What to see The nunnery is modest in size compared with the lavra at Rila, but its charm lies precisely in the quiet and the natural setting: a small church, a few buildings and the surrounding mountain forest. The interior preserves icons and painting in the Orthodox tradition. For the visitor, its main value lies in the connection with the great Rila Monastery and in the secluded, restful atmosphere of a stop on the way there.

Practical It sits on the route to Rila Monastery and is reached by car; many visitors include it as a short stop on the way to the lavra. It is an active place of worship, and as a nunnery it asks for modest dress (shoulders and knees covered) and respect for quiet and for services. The best time is from late spring through autumn. Nearby, the unmissable sight remains Rila Monastery itself, with its painted church and Hrelyu's Tower.
