About Belashtitsa Monastery “Sveti Velikomachenik Georgi Pobedonosets”
Belashtitsa Monastery "St. George the Great Martyr and Victory-Bearer" lies near the village of Belashtitsa, on the northern slopes of the Rhodope Mountains not far from Plovdiv. It is a small rural monastic foundation dedicated to St. George, patron of soldiers and one of the most venerated saints in Orthodoxy. Like many monasteries around Plovdiv, it has passed through periods of flourishing and decline over the centuries, tied to the spiritual life of the villages at the edge of the Thracian plain.
What to see and how to get there
The complex is modest and peaceful, with a church and monastic buildings set among greenery — a fitting stop for those seeking quiet reflection away from the busy tourist routes. It is reached by car on a short road from Plovdiv through Belashtitsa village. As an active place of worship, modest dress and quiet are appropriate, especially during services. The feast of St. George (6 May) is the best time to see the community gathered in celebration. A visit combines well with the sights of Plovdiv and the other monasteries around Asenovgrad.
Note: detailed information on this foundation's history and artistic heritage should be verified on site.
