About Arapovo Monastery
Arapovo Monastery — "St. Nedelya"
On the fertile plain at the foot of the Rhodope Mountains, near the village of Zlatovrah and not far from Asenovgrad and Plovdiv, stands Arapovo Monastery, dedicated to St. Nedelya. It is one of the few Bulgarian monasteries built in the very midst of the National Revival, in the mid-19th century — a period when places of worship also took on an important role in the awakening of Bulgarian identity under Ottoman rule. Its fortified appearance, with solid walls and a defensive tower, recalls the troubled times in which it was raised.
What to see
The massive stone tower, built as a point of defence and refuge, is the monastery's defining feature and can be climbed for the view. The church preserves Revival-era murals and icons, in the warm atmosphere characteristic of those years. In local memory the monastery is linked to figures and events of the Bulgarian national struggle — the concrete details are best confirmed on site. Near the complex rises a spring regarded as healing, associated with the feast of St. Nedelya.
Practical
The monastery is most easily reached by car, on the road from Asenovgrad, making it a fitting half-day destination in the surroundings of Plovdiv — naturally combined with Bachkovo Monastery and Asen's Fortress. It is an active place of worship: dress modestly, keep quiet, and respect services. Spring and autumn are loveliest, when the plain and the Rhodope hills are in colour. Rated 4.8 by visitors.
