About Bachkovo Monastery “Dormition of the Theotokos”

Bachkovo Monastery — "Dormition of the Theotokos"

Tucked into the valley of the Chaya River, in the foothills of the Rhodope Mountains south of Asenovgrad, Bachkovo Monastery is one of the oldest and most significant Orthodox monasteries in south-eastern Europe. It was founded in 1083 by Gregory Pakourianos, a prominent Byzantine military commander of Georgian origin (together with his brother Abasius), during the Byzantine era. This origin explains its singular character: across the centuries Bachkovo has been a meeting point of Byzantine, Georgian and Bulgarian traditions. Today it is the second largest and most important of Bulgaria's monasteries, after Rila.

What to see

The oldest surviving element is the ossuary, an 11th-century building with remarkable Byzantine frescoes that rank among the most valuable of their age. The main church, "Dormition of the Theotokos," houses the miracle-working icon of the Mother of God — one of the most venerated in Bulgaria and the focus of large pilgrimages, especially at Easter and the monastery's feast. The 17th-century refectory holds exceptional murals, including the famous procession with the icon. Paved courtyards, arcades, fountains and exterior wall paintings make up an ensemble of rare beauty. The tomb of Patriarch Kiril of Bulgaria also lies here.

Practical

The monastery is about 10 km south of Asenovgrad and 30 km from Plovdiv, easily reached by car or organised tour; a short road climbs from Bachkovo village. It is an active monastic community: dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered), keep quiet, and respect services. Spring and autumn are loveliest, when the Rhodope valley turns colour. Nearby, Asen's Fortress and the Rhodope villages are well worth seeing. Rated 4.8, Bachkovo is one of Bulgaria's essential visits.
