About Stariyat Chark
The old water-powered sawmill of Tsigov Chark
"Stariyat Chark" – meaning "The Old Sawmill" – sits at the very root of the name of the Tsigov Chark resort in the Rhodope Mountains. A "chark" is a water-driven sawmill, a traditional installation once used across Bulgaria's mountain regions to cut logs using the power of streams. The site keeps the memory of this forestry craft alive and forms part of a small green corner in the heart of the area, near the Batak reservoir.
What to see
This is an atmospheric stop: the rustic setting, the weathered timber, the water and the surrounding forest. It suits a short stroll, a few photos and a relaxed pause rather than a standalone sight that fills hours. The 4.7 rating reflects the quiet charm of the place.
Practical
It lies within the Tsigov Chark resort, easily reached by car and a short distance from the town of Batak. It's best enjoyed as part of a wider day in the area, alongside the Batak reservoir, Fotinovo Falls and walks through the pine forests. Most pleasant from spring to autumn. For opening times and any facilities, check the information on site.
