About Devil's Throat Cave
Devil's Throat Cave
The Devil's Throat (Дяволското гърло) is one of the most dramatic caves in the Rhodope Mountains, hidden in the Trigrad Gorge in south-western Bulgaria, close to the Greek border. Its name comes from the shape of the entrance, which in profile resembles a devil's head. It is an abyss-type cave carved by an underground river that forms the highest underground waterfall in the Balkans — a sight that overwhelms with its force and the roaring acoustics of falling water beneath the rock vault.
What you'll see
The visit begins through a tunnel bored into the rock that leads straight into the Hall of Thunder, a vast cavern where the Trigradska River plunges from a great height, filling the space with a deafening roar and a fine mist. From there the marked route climbs a steep stone staircase of more than three hundred steps — the most demanding part of the visit. The site is tied to the myth of Orpheus: legend says the Thracian musician descended here into the underworld in search of Eurydice. One detail fuels the mystery — objects swept in by the water at the entrance never reappear where the river resurfaces.
Practical
The cave lies on the route between Devin and the village of Trigrad, in superb mountain country, most easily reached by car; the drive through the Trigrad Gorge is an attraction in itself. Entry is by guided tour only, in groups, along a fixed route. Bring footwear with good grip (the steps can be wet and slippery) and a jacket, as it stays cool and damp inside year-round. Check opening times and availability before setting off, especially out of season. Nearby, the Yagodina Cave and the surrounding Rhodope villages are well worth exploring. Details are indicative — please confirm on site.
