About Church of Saint Vissarion of Smolyan
The Cathedral of Saint Vissarion of Smolyan is the most imposing Orthodox church in the heart of the Rhodope Mountains and an unmistakable landmark of the town of Smolyan. It is dedicated to Saint Vissarion, Metropolitan of Smolyan, martyred in the 17th century — a local saint deeply venerated in this part of Bulgaria. The cathedral is also the first new Orthodox church raised in the Rhodopes in nearly 130 years.
What to see Construction began with the laying of the foundation stone in April 2002 and concluded with the consecration on 2 July 2006. Its dimensions are remarkable: the nave, of about 382 m², can hold around 500 worshippers, the dome measures 17 metres in diameter, and the belfry rises to 32 metres — which is why it is counted among the largest churches in southern Bulgaria. The bright, spacious interior and the icons dedicated to Saint Vissarion reward a visit; even from afar, the cathedral's white silhouette dominates the panorama of the town in the valley below.
Practical The cathedral stands in Smolyan, easily reached by car from Plovdiv or Chepelare along the roads that wind through the Rhodopes. As an active place of worship, entry is free, but modest dress is expected — covered shoulders and knees — and quiet during services. It is most pleasant in summer and early autumn, when the Rhodopes are green and cool. Around you lie the resort of Pamporovo, caves and traditional Rhodope villages, so the cathedral fits naturally into a mountain itinerary. The 4.7 rating places it among the most appreciated religious sites in the region.
